HomeStars has multiple ways to connect homeowners with the right service professional for any project big or small. As a homeowner looking to hire a pro for a home improvement project you may: browse the categories, browse the tasks, search for a category or company, or simply submit a service request and let us do the work for you!
Browsing the categories and tasks is a great place to start for selecting a service professional for your specific project. There are a total of 24 categories and over 500 tasks listed. The categories contain broad subjects of home improvement projects that are further broken down into specific tasks under that broad category. The tasks only menu differs from the categories as it contains more specific content relating to home improvement projects.

If you are still in the planning stages and are not entirely sure of what your project includes, browse the categories. If you know exactly what your project includes, take a look at the tasks menu and find your specific project.
If you aren’t seeing your specific category or task, there is also a search bar to find categories and companies in your area. This search bar is helpful if, for example, your friend has referred a company to you, or you heard/saw a company’s advertisement somewhere and you are curious to learn more about them and would like to check out their profile before you go ahead with your decision to hire them.
If you don’t have time to browse through the category and task menus, we suggest submitting a service request. Simply enter what project you are looking for into the search bar, enter your postal code, describe the issue at hand, and you will be matched with top rated pros to complete your project.
Once you have selected your project within the preferred menu, you will be directed to a page with a list of top rated pros who offer that scope of work in your service area selected. The list of companies are sorted by average customer rating, which is the default, however, there is an option to further filter them, for example, by Star Score, Recently Reviewed, and Best of HomeStars. At HomeStars we encourage homeowners to select companies with high Star Scores. We also recommend that homeowners to select companies who have our HomeStars Verified badge on their profile.
Once you have reviewed the available companies, if you are confident with your selection you may request a quote right away, from one or more companies. However, if you would like to read about and see more of the companies work, which we strongly encourage, go ahead and click into the selected company’s profile page and browse their most recent reviews and photo gallery.
When you have found the company that you would like to hire, you may contact the company yourself or interact with them directly through HomeStars. In order to interact with a service professional through our website you must create an account. You are able to create a new account using your email address, Facebook account or Google account. We highly recommend creating an account as it is useful to organize and keep track of quotes and conversations with multiple companies. Creating an account also allows you to write a review for companies that you have hired.
