Michael is a Software Engineer who’s been at HomeStars since September 2017 and has learned that his ideal teammate is one who he can bounce ideas back and forth with, is hardworking, pushes him, and is a nice person. When not at work you can find him watching sports, playing sports, watching movies or going out with friends and having a good time. Meet Michael by learning more about him below.
What is your role at HomeStars?
I’m a Software Engineer and what my role consists of is basically building and maintaining all the features our homeowners and pros use on our website. We typically work in 2-week sprint cycles, deciding what we will work on during the sprint and basically start the sprint tackling these different tasks that get rolled out to all our users. We end sprints with a retrospective. These days we have a big homepage refresh which is going to be exciting and I’m also working on changing how our assets are bundled.
What makes you excited to come to work every day?
The work we do, the learning and most importantly the people and the culture.
If you could trade jobs with someone at HomeStars for a day who would it be & why?
Kevin Carey, he’s our product designer. I just find it super cool and interesting having the possibility to redesign so many aspects of our apps and just bringing a design vision to life. I like great design.
What has your journey at HomeStars been like so far?
I started off at Homestars as a frontend developer that was kind of new to working in the world of React. From there, I grew into becoming pretty good at React and extending to the backend and getting to grasps with some Rails till the point right now that I’m pretty much Full-stack with the ability to work all across our tech stack.
How do you stay up to date within your evolving industry?
Lots of reading, talking to coworkers as well as friends in the industry, going to tech talks etc.
As a child what was your dream job?
As a kid, my dream job was to become a scientist. My parents got me a chemistry set and I mixed a bunch of stuff together and it turned into this brownish looking blob that started overflowing everywhere. So after that, I switched to dreaming about tech.
