HomeStars is proud to shine a light on employees that hustle hard to embody our award-winning culture and we want you to want to join them! Get to know your future teammates, why they love working at HomeStars, and what they’re doing outside of work.
Gerry is a Principal Engineer who initially began at HomeStars in 2007, took a break and came back again in September 2019. The tough challenges and amazing people that are inquisitive, problem-solving, and hard-working are what make Gerry excited enough to hit a coffee shop and come to work before our office opens. Meet Gerry by reading more about him below!
What is your role at HomeStars?
As the Principal Engineer, I plan and implement software development projects to help Homeowners connect with Service Pros. Design a better architecture to reduce time to market of new features and reduce defect rates. Help developers increase their skills and happiness!
An interesting project we recently completed was a Mapping application that converts our circle based Service Areas to FSAs and shows FSAs with counts of Service Requests and SPs on a map.
If you could trade jobs with someone at HomeStars for a day, who would it be and why?
David Chasteau our Product Support Specialist — super interesting to see the impact of bugs we produce and better connect with the front-lines of our business.
When you aren’t at HomeStars, what are you doing?
Winter: mostly skiing. Summer: on my motorbike or working on it or our car; windsurfing (attempting to hydrofoil); camping or otherwise travelling. This summer we hope to go to Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve in St Lawrence.
How do you stay up to date within your evolving industry?
Staying up-to-date in fast-paced tech is exceedingly difficult. I mostly use online resources and good ol’ fashioned books. My membership to the Toronto Public Library is always up-to-date, and their e-reader is fantastic!
What are 5 hashtags that describe you?
What’s a hashtag? 🙂 #committed #hardworking #generalist #inquisitive #resultsfocused
As a child what was your dream job?
I dreamed of being a submariner as a child. When I was scared I would imagine my bed was a submarine and I would submerge to the depths to find comfort. I think I picked a better career!
