In our series Under One Roof, we have explored home renovation ideas to accommodate two generations, aging parents and boomerang kids. For many, there are other options for multi-generations.
Laneway homes have become increasingly more popular particularly in Vancouver. A laneway house is often built on an existing lot along the back lane- normally the place reserved for a garage. This home is an ideal space for a boomerang child moving back with their family as the space is separate from the main home on the property. Zoning requirements differ by municipality so be sure to check with your building permit and zoning office.
The definition of a carriage house has changed over time. A carriage house, or coach house, was a garage, of sorts for horse-drawn carriages. Many included a room on the top floor for the coachman. Today, you can find carriage houses as a separate building on large lots for larger homes. The carriage house is a standalone home that can accommodate guests and family members who need a place to stay…long-term.
If you are fortunate to have a pool, you have a good excuse to have a pool house as a housing option for one of the generations living with you. Pool houses don’t have to be constructed for a “quick change.” Many pool houses are equipped with all the features of home and are perfect to accommodate guests.
There are a number of options available for multi-generational housing. Be sure to check HomeStars for reviews of local renovators and for further recommendations, consult your local home builders association.
