The kitchen is the heart of the home; the place where family and friends gather to eat, drink and enjoy being together. This could be one of the reasons why a kitchen renovation is considered one of the best investments you can make in your home.
We see thousands of kitchen renovations from homeowner reviews each year. Here are our hands-down favourite!
Company: Bellsmith Carpentry & Renovation
Our top 2016 kitchen renovation selection is this sublime work by Toronto’s Bellsmith Carpentry and Renovation. Everything about this kitchen is balanced perfection. The lovely, airy feeling is delivered upon by using white as the primary paint choice, and by installing fewer upper cabinets in favour of open shelving and an incredible feature wall/backsplash.
The stunning backsplash is totally fresh and original. We love the pop of colour, and the graphical tiles that resemble chemical molecules are the perfect foil to the white purity of the cabinetry and counters. The open shelving, restrained brass finishings and large hanging lamp in the breakfast nook add just the right organic touch of warmth.
Second only to our love for the graphic backsplash is the timeless herringbone-patterned hardwood floor. A truly fabulous kitchen that does justice for this new addition to a downtown 1883 home.
Company: Kitchen Makeovers
This B.C. homeowner opted to refinish her beautiful 30-year old oak cabinets, rather than buy new. The result is stunning, and at 5K, is vastly less expensive than purchasing new cabinets. Of course, the gorgeous new flooring, countertops, range hood, and new appliances help to elevate this beautiful renovation.
Company: Valentini Kitchens
Valentini Kitchens brought their generations of experience in renovating kitchens to bear in this beautiful floor to ceiling extreme makeover. As with many old homes, new walls and floors were required along with all of the aesthetic aspects of the renovation. We love how the space has been transformed with intelligent space planning, elegant colour combinations, and fine finishes.
Company: The Pine Nuts Woodworking and Renovations Ltd.
Our Calgary homeowner was looking to update their kitchen with a more contemporary look and functionality. We certainly feel this was achieved, and more. Removing the round oak table, building a window seat bench and re-engineering the layout of the island was a stroke of genius. We also love how the microwave has been moved from above the stove to a cubby in the island. The modern and sleek range hood is an elegant touch that further modernizes the kitchen.
Company: J. Roberts & Associates
A total renovation was required for this kitchen. Most of the main floor was taken down to the studs (including removing a load-bearing wall) to install a brand new kitchen. The reno also included new floors pot lights, windows, insulation, and updating the heating.
The results are spectacular. Of particular note on the before photos is the groovy 80’s lit drop ceiling that we are so glad to see gone in the reno. The new kitchen is refined in its use of gorgeous finishes and products. We love how the space is now so open and airy. The Moroccan-style backsplash adds a stroke of whimsy to the otherwise subtle decor and the marble countertops are truly fabulous.
Company: Calgary Custom Cabinetry Ltd.
We love the transformation that was made from 90’s boho ode to red to a modern, fresh kitchen with much better space utilization. We particularly appreciate how the designer added illuminated glass-fronted cabinets that extend to the height of the ceiling. The centre island is much more practical shape for cooking purposes as well as traffic flow. Removing the desk area adjacent to the stove and replacing with new cabinetry was also a great idea, not to mention changing up the dated backsplash countertops and overhead lighting.
