The HomeStars Giving Back Award was created to recognize companies who go above and beyond to help out their communities. The following companies gave more than just monetary donations, they put in their time, effort and labour to give back in any way they can.
HomeStars would like to congratulate the following companies for the significant charitable work in their communities throughout 2016.
Alberta Vinyl Windows & Doors Ltd.
Over the past 4 years, Alberta Vinyl Windows & Doors Ltd. has been fostering sick and homeless dogs, from weaning mothers, to dogs that have been shot and injured. They are up to 68 dogs all together in their personal home and have donated their time, food, toys, and medical needs for these adorable animals. In addition to this amazing work, they have also donated all of their remnant windows to Habitat for Humanity.
When asked what their goal was when it comes to their community, All Weather Windows discussed their 4 pillar approach. Strengthening families by assisting organizations who support children and families that fall below the poverty line, are new to Canada, or suffering from illness. Providing shelter by partnering with Habitat for Humanity and giving away thousands of windows and doors and countless volunteer hours. Supporting education by providing industry related bursaries, internships, and programs. Aiding in Health and wellness by donating to many mental health organizations and providing opportunities for the disabled. This work is very impressive and it speaks volumes about the type of culture that All Weather Windows employs and promotes.
Claw Roofing Specialists owners Carmen and Peter have been hugely supportive in the LGBTQ community. Aside from being Camp fYreFly’s (a camp for LGBTQ kids) second biggest financial backer, they have actively assumed a supportive role for the camp. Picking up on an issue very close to their hearts, they travel with their daughter Marissa, sharing their experience in the hopes of raising awareness, acceptance, and donations to the cause. They’ve also collaborated with the UofA and Camp fYreFly to put out an article and video sharing Marissa’s story to help promote all the good things that the camp brings to the lives of youth within the LGBTQ community. Carmen especially has made herself available on a personal level to so many of these young individuals, acting as a motherly figure in the lives of those struggling to find acceptance and peace.
Done Right Roofing owner, Sherene St. Cyr has been involved in donated approximately $15,000 of In Kind consulting work to the Taku River Tlingit First Nation (TRTFN) in an effort to help the community develop a Comprehensive Community Plan. DRR and Sherene mentored TRTFN women in skills ranging from excel programming, to communication, to marketing, with the goal of empowering women. She volunteered training services to a Life Skills Program in Atlin, B.C. which worked with troubled and unemployed young men in Atlin, B.C. DRR sponsored Cedar Hat Weaver, Debra Michel from the Stolo Nation, in the development and printing of a professional brochure to promote her work. The Taku Kwan Dance Group travels all over the country representing the Tlingit people and exposing it’s young members to the world outside of their village. Done Right Roofing donated funds directly to the Taku Kwan Dancers for their upcoming trip to the Hobiyee Celebration 2017 in Vancouver, B.C. Great work Sherene and Done Right Roofing!
Green Thumb Landscaping created and organized the Christmas Carapace Campaign, working alongside Kids in The Hall to collect and fill backpacks for homeless or at-risk youth. 2016 was the second year running this event and their goal was to distribute 300 backpacks to local youth. In addition to this, Green Thumb Landscaping has been working directly with Entrust to hire people with disabilities, allowing everyone a chance of work. Congrats on the award and keep up the good work!
When asked about their community involvement, Hatton’s Hardwood Floors Inc. discussed how they “donated money, food, blankets, toys, treats and time to the Calgary Humane Society with the hopes of giving shelter animals a Merry Christmas. We went in to the Calgary Humane Society and spent time cuddling the animals. We donated some of the proceeds from our jobs for the months of September and October and added to our donation for a total of $1000.00 and approx $200.00 in food, toys, treats, and blankets. We feel very strongly about the welfare of animals and plan to continue to support the Calgary Humane Society in many ways in the future.” This is impressive work and we are happy to see you receive this award!
Horizon Heating is a corporate sponsor for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, assisting not only through financial aid but through countless volunteer hours. Matthew Kramer, the owner of Horizon Heating, is this year’s Corporate Chair of the Volunteer Leadership Committee for the Society. They have also sponsored a company team in the Light the Night charity walk in support of the cause for the past 8 years. Congrats on all of your hard work!
I Know A Guy Contracting Services Inc.
I Know A Guy Contracting Services Inc. has done some incredible work in their community within the past year. They have donated 100 lunches to kids in schools, on behalf of each renovation client they serve. They have volunteered making lunches at the Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids kitchen every other month and they volunteer at the breakfast program at the local school once each week, and donate as needed. The company says, “we encourage our team to get active in their community, and in efforts that are meaningful to them, and we let them know we are interested in supporting them in any way we can. Sometimes that means donating to a run or walk that a trade is participating in, sometimes it’s buying from their child’s school fundraiser.” This work you all have put in is so special and we are happy to have you receive this award.
We would like to congratulate Liberty Security on their Giving Back Award. When asked about how they give back to their community they stated they “host the Liberty Classic Golf Tournament every year with the proceeds going towards the Neurosurgery Kids Fund and Peterson Foundation for Parkinson’s. We also participated in the ‘Kids in the Hall Bistro’ and ‘Green Thumb Landscaping’s Christmas Care Pack Campaign for 2 years, and have donated goods for Youth Care Packs for at-risk and homeless Edmonton youth. Liberty has also been a part of Ronald Donald House’s Meals That Mend program.” A job well done!
It is clear that Mad Maids makes giving back to the community a priority within their company. “We love doing what we can to help and always have our ears open to help out local charities. Recently we’ve either volunteered with or donated to the WFP, the International Children’s Festival, Give Back to Fort Mac, Operation Friendship Seniors Society, Edmonton Poetry Festival, Rethink Breast Cancer Calgary, Heart and Solar, Calgary Flames Foundation.” Keep up this fantastic work!
MaidPro funds its own non-profit organization, dedicated to helping kids at home and abroad. For the past three years the owner has personally supported an orphanage in Belize, as well as local donations and support to Wood’s Homes, The United Way, Alberta Children’s Hospital and the Airdrie Food Bank. MaidPro deserves to be recognized for such unbelievable work in their local community and abroad. Congratulations guys!
MAXgreen Windows, Siding and Roofing.
MAXgreen has done outstanding work in their community. When asked about it they spoke about how “we donate $10 for every window and door replaced and $50 for every roofing or siding project to local charities. We also plant a tree per window and door and 5 trees per roofing and siding project to help give back to the planet. MAXgreen has raised over $115,000 for local charities and planted 5,000 trees in Alberta to help re-green our province! Our team members volunteer to make lunches for kids in need with Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids, as well as donate sports event tickets to Kids Up Front. MAXgreen was a title sponsor for a Charity Golf Tournament benefitting the Children’s Hospital and has also done several pro bono projects to help organizations and individuals in need.” Congratulations on a job well done!
Not only do all Modern Purair Calgary employees volunteer a shift at the Calgary Food bank on a monthly basis, but the company also makes a monthly financial donation. Fantastic work!
Morrison Homes sets the bar high as they have donated 1.4 million dollars to help homelessness in Calgary. In addition to that amazing donation, they have also built a 24-unit assisted living facility that was recently turned over to the YMCA in which their staff were involved in naming process and the building process. What an amazing story. Congratulations on your Giving Back Award!
Nu-Life Carpet Care is owned and operated by Patrick Nickel who cares deeply about his employees and his community. When asked more about this work, it was said that “he has served the Calgary Drop-In Centre with semi-annual carpet cleaning since 2012 and provides them with products throughout the year. These donated services and products equate to close to $4000 per year. Patrick works right beside his technicians as they work and the technicians also donate their time for the cleaning that occurs during the Christmas Season. In addition, Nu-Life also donated $1000 for the DI’s fundraising golf tournament this past September.” This work by Patrick and Nu-Life Carpet Care Inc. is so inspiring and HomeStars is happy to award you.
This year, on December, Proline Electric went to Our Lady Peace Elementary School in Edmonton and provided Christmas Pizza Lunch, providing the kids with a full lunch with juice boxes, cupcakes, and candy canes, as well as some arts and crafts. They also provided an electrical safety demonstration on the importance of smoke detectors for the students.This year Proline sponsored the Drugs and addiction magazine- which is delivered to all schools in St.Albert. Proline Electric also takes part in providing Christmas for 2 families every year, donating both presents and food. Lastly, Proline went the extra step and sponsored 2 local St. Albert Hockey teams, providing jackets and toques for the entire team. This is such incredible work, and I am sure your community appreciates it all!
Trico Homes believes in investing both money and resources into the communities they serve. Trico was the first home builder to become a certified benefit corporation (B Corp) who is dedicated to using their business as a force for good. Some of their greatest projects include: breathing life into tired community recreation centres, providing staff and resources to build homes for poverty stricken families in Mexico, finding government funding to help build affordable and accessible rental homes for disabled Calgarians, partnering with indigenous communities and rebuilding flood devastated homes. Trico consistently finds new ways to sustain business while giving back and empowering community groups. Congratulations on the award and all of your hard work!
Wallace Fleming & Associates choose a few projects a year to give back to the community. This year it was for a family of six with twins on the way who could not afford a basement renovation but desperately needed the extra space. This story of the Zacharias family inspired Greg and his partner Vaughan to do this special job. With the whole renovation equaling around $35,000, Wallace Fleming & Associates agreed to take on the job for only $25,000, in order to help the family in need. What an amazing story!
Scott from WPI Renovations has worked with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta Airdrie/Crossfield chapter as the Vice Chair since its inception in May 2016. Since then he has been Working with Airdrie homeowners to earn volunteer hours, host parade floats, and raise awareness for the organization. This is such a great cause and a great effort by Scott and WPI Renovations!
