As our priorities and daily lives shifted in 2020, our bathrooms became a prime destination to recuperate in. As we enter into 2021, self-care and relaxation will continue to be more important than ever before. If you’ve been thinking about updating your bathroom, either with a complete renovation or just some touch ups, here are the trends to keep in mind for 2021.
1. Back to Nature
Bathrooms can sometimes feel a little sterile. A lack of colour mixed with cold metal hardware and bland tiles can make it feel more like a doctor’s office than a spa retreat. The best way to warm it up? Add elements found in nature. A big trend in design this year is incorporating nature’s healing elements. This can be done through your use of colour and patterns, think deep greens and palm prints, or by using materials like wood and bamboo. Designer tip: Try incorporating cedar wood into your bathroom design. It doesn’t warp due to moisture and it smells beautiful.
2. A Focus on Vanities
Use your vanity to make a design statement. In 2021, we’re going to see more focus on vanities being treated as furniture pieces. This means less big box store vanities that are one size fits all. Instead, unique and custom pieces such as mid-century modern credenzas or antique sideboards will be more commonly used as vanities. Do you have an antique piece of furniture buried away? It could be the perfect piece to tie your bathroom renovation together.
3. Eye Catching Tile
What’s a bathroom without tile? One of the key elements in any bathroom, tile plays a big part in its overall design. This year designers are using tiles to create patterns, as opposed to buying patterned tiles. Think traditional subway tile but installed in a basket weave or double herringbone pattern. This takes your builder-basic tile to the next level by creating visual interest. The best part about this trend? It’s affordable. Speak to a tiling professional about the ways they can lay inexpensive tiles to create an eye catching pattern.
4. Make It Work For You
Being at home more has made us realize what works and what doesn’t. Perhaps you’ve noticed you rarely use your bathtub or that you’re desperately in need of a double sink. Let 2021 be the year you renovate your bathroom to make it work for you. Ideally, your bathroom should look great and also make you feel great. Simple things like updating the lighting so it doesn’t cast unflattering shadows on your face can make a big difference. Focusing on making your home work for you will be a trend we’ll see more of throughout other rooms as well.
5. Storage Always Matters
Clever storage will always be a trend but especially so in 2021. With an increased focus on self-care, there’s an increase in purchases and the need to store them. Try adding additional nooks or shelves to display your nice toiletries. You can also add plants to help bring your space back to nature. A bathroom renovation specialist can help you capitalize on the space you’re not already using. If your bathroom lacks storage completely, they can also help you with this.
Trends come and go as our style is forever changing. Whether you love or hate these trends, what matters is creating a bathroom that works for you.
