A basement renovation can be a costly, time-consuming undertaking, but is often well worth it. Gorgeous is the only word we have to describe our top 6 basement transformations, which is great because basement renos are not cheap. In fact, according to our data, collected from thousands of homeowners, basement renovation costs have increased 23% between 2014 to 2016. The average cost of a basement renovation in Canada is ~$20,000 – and this average wholly depends upon the nature, size and finishings of the renovation.

Without further ado, here are our top 6 basement renovation picks for 2016.

Location: Vaughan

Company: DiRenzo Group

This is a perfect basement renovation. We love everything about it; the recessed lighting, the light wood floors, the layout that makes the whole renovation look lovely and spacious. Oh and the fireplace on the stone feature wall! But the crowing glory is definitely the glorious kitchen with tons of counter space, ample cupboards and stunning marble backsplash. Nothing about this kitchen says basement. Superb!

An ode to drinking fine wine, we easily see ourselves kicking back with friends, sipping on a drink in front of the fireplace, cozy with our friends. The walnut feature wine rack is the piece de resistance, along with the wet bar and custom cabinetry that makes this downstairs entertaining space so perfect.

We love this basement renovation for the pure whimsy of the finishings. The bathroom vanity is off the charts. Let’s talk about the fantastical pair of antlers above the vanity; Mirrors in bathrooms are definitely overrated. And the copper sink is just beyond. The muted colour palette with punches of burnt orange and mix or organic materials is pure genius, along with the timeless furniture choices. Bravo.

Company: Bourne Builders

This homeowner converted an open, bare concrete basement into a chic living space with a coveted, separate bathroom and laundry room. The process involved levelling the floor, completely updating all the electrical work, installing new plumbing for the bathroom/laundry room, creating a bulkhead around the HVAC vents, and building a small furnace room. Bourne Builders also built practical storage space under the basement stairs.
