At Christmas this year we asked employees to bring an unwrapped toy for a child so they can have a Christmas. We collected over 50 toys and donated them to a local charity called Safety Net. Then 3 days before Christmas Safety Net called AtlasCare to ask if they were willing to donate 28 Christmas turkeys in the next 2 hours. Ciscon Landscaping.

Paul and Carmen Cisterna, along with their company, Ciscon Landscaping, had the opportunity to help out a family in need of some support and a place to unwind and connect as a family. The mother of this family of 5, was diagnosed with metastasis breast cancer. After extensive therapy, and almost 1 year later, the cancer had now spread to her brain. Paul and Carmen go on to say, “given the fact that we’re not scientists or doctors that can help her with treatments, one thing we knew for sure, was how to create relaxing and beautiful landscapes, that offer a tranquil outdoor place for families. The one thing we were most proud of, was seeing the generosity of our crews displayed on this project….some of which even offered free labour just to help out this cause; however, it didn’t stop there. Once we had started to reach out, we had gained additional support from our local landscape suppliers (Legends Landscape Supply) as well as our manufacturer (Techo-bloc) to assist in carrying out this project. Once we were completed, seeing the smiles on their children’s faces and the tears of happiness from their parents, solidified why we do what we do. More importantly, it was very gratifying to see everyone come together as a team in order to make this happen.” As a company we are planning to introduce a yearly initiative to continue giving back to our community and those in need, reminding us that it’s the acts in which we do, that truly help one another.” What an amazing story!

Firemen Movers also collects furniture for “Post-Fire” families that have lost their homes and possessions to a fire, keeping this furniture until a family is in need and when they then come to the warehouse to pick out what they can use. The furniture items are then delivered at no cost to these families when they are ready. What amazing work!

Robin goes on to discuss the company’s other community involvement this year sharing that, “this spring, my gas tech, Connor and I were part of a very talented, hard-working group that completely renovated a home for a discounted price in order to help a family in need. I’m still happily involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters Lanark. The best of 2016, however, has been a lot of “reverse mentoring”, clients teaching me. FW’s online presence has introduced me to so many great, kind, happy clients. Common to all were people who were caring, empathetic and respectful of others. I am a better person for meeting them.” This work is inspiring and HomeStars is happy to recognize you and your company!

The chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Ottawa section, reached out to us at HomeStars to express his gratitude toward Horizon Plumbing and Piping systems and nominate them for this award. He began telling us that, “we have a program called EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service). Some of the rules for grant funding of EPICS projects are involvement with high school students and local charitable organizations. We approached Christie Lakes Kids and through their Inner City kids program, developed an idea where the high school kids could apply for a grant to implement solar-powered hot showers for the island camp. Once the project was picked we approached Marc Rainville from Horizon Plumbing to help us obtain supplies (covered by our EPICs grant) and asked if he could volunteer some time and expertise to help us install the water system and a build a shed to house it. Most of the installation was completed this fall, with plans for the final turn up on the showers in the spring, for the next summer session at the camp. Marc gladly agreed to help us out with this project. Thanks to Marc and his team for their contribution to the success of this project.” A big thank you to Marc and Horizon Plumbing and Piping system for your generosity!

You Move Me is the proud partner of the Furniture Bank, whose charitable mission statement is that one’s used furniture has the power to change lives. In 2016, for the second consecutive year, You Move Me was the Title Sponsor of Furniture Bank’s annual charity gala, “Chair Affair”. Since 2014, You Move Me has assisted Furniture Bank through the collection of 3,352 furniture items which were donated to 602 families in the GTA area that were formerly homeless and now have a true home. Moving forward they claim that, “our goal in 2017 is to find new and innovative ways to expand our partnership, in order to increase the total number of donations and furnish more family homes in our community.” Well done You Move Me Toronto/GTA!
