Interesting exhibitors at the Home Show
I was recently at the International Home Show and thought I’d highlight some different ideas and green exhibitors;
Gliding Shelf Solutions – Marianna Keselman launched this business that takes your existing cabinets and installs new custom fitting gliding shelves and drawers. What a great way of economically updating your kitchen and pantry. The products are made in Canada and you can get this product measured, ordered and installed from a local design consultant. Check out their site to learn more. If you’ve used them, please write a review.
Ontario Thermal Wall Systems – Did you know you could insulate your home with straw bales? Ian Weir, an engineering graduate from Queens and LEED certified profession became passionate about this building material and decided to start his own company this year to build more homes, cottages and farms with walls insulated with straw bales. A couple of the advantages are reducing you energy bill significantly, better sound proofing and better for the environment as Ian explains the many ways on his website (use less trees and replace with inexpensive renewable green materials). Ian has several customers interested in building their home and cottage with his Thermal Wall Systems and he’s posted photos on his site of projects he’s completed this year. Congratulations Ian!
Quest Geothermal and Yanch Heating & Air Conditioning are one of a few companies that are now offering geothermal energy systems to replace your furnace. In a nutshell, a geothermal system extracts heat from the earth from pipes buried deep around your property into a geothermal unit (the size of your furnace) that’s installed in your home. In the summer the process is reversed and the heat is extracted from your house and sent through the pipes to be buried in the ground with equal efficiency. We did a blog post two years ago about a homeowner who took the leap and spent the premium to install this system. It can take 10-15 years to pay our the investment but if you’re going to be in the house for a long time it’s worth doing.
I also want to talk about some design ideas to beautify the inside of your home – walls, furnaces, and cupboard inserts are not as glamourous as:

Wilkinson Fireplaces – As I walked past their booth I stopped immediately and met Jordan McMullen. They had a beautiful wall of stone around a fireplace and some gorgeous cabinetry. They have one review on our site that speaks about the nice people I met.
Cornice Trim – I spoke with Mitchell at his booth and he said his company will go over and above to do small jobs and condo’s versus some companies that only want to spend their time trimming 4000 + sq foot mansions. I just checked out Cornice Trim’s reviews – and while they have only three, two of them are not very good. It would be nice if Mitchell responded to these reviews, as he clearly had a lot of passion for his business and the quality of his products and services.
