Different Exterior Window Finishes

If you’re having trouble figuring out if there’s really a snow storm out there or if it’s only your windows frosting over, or if your windows are sealed shut by ice, or they’re just not providing much of a barrier between you and the wintery weather, it’s probably time to start thinking about replacing your windows. Windows, after all, can account for up to 25% of your home’s heat loss.

Deciding that you need to replace your windows is the easy part. The harder part is deciding which style of window to choose, sash or casement, and what kind of material you’d like to use.

There is a substantial difference in the various window finishes, some offering more in style than durability, others offering excellent energy efficiency. EnerCan has a great website where you can find out which brand and model of windows are Energy Star approved for your region.

Different types of Window finishes:

Baked on painted finish, wood windows: The baked on painted finish of a wood exterior is the least durable but still guaranteed for 15 years. It is, however, the most versatile in terms of colour (almost any colour can be used on these windows), while wood windows tend to suit an older, traditional home.

Vinyl windows are available in the least number of colours, but are guaranteed for 20 years.

Aluminum windows are guaranteed for 25 years, but come in a limited selection of colours. Some companies offer custom colours for an added charge.

Fiberglass windows have the advantage of having the fiberglass and window glass expanding and contracting at the same rate, increasing the energy efficiency of the product.

There are other exterior finishes as well including steel, fiberglass with wood, and composite.

Some windows can be “retrofitted” meaning that the exterior frame remains and just the interior trim and window panes are replaced. The cost tends to be about half that of replacing the entire window. If your window frame is solid and you’re reluctant to change it in order to maintain the character of your home, this method may offer a viable solution. Check with your window company for options and don’t forget to search our directory for window companies in your neighbourhood. Some of the ones with lots of good feedback from their customers include: CasaBella Windows, Ambia Windows, and Consumer’s Choice Home Improvements.
